Lost to a 1253 in round one, finished 17th In Runde eins gegen 1253 verloren, am Ende Platz 17

Started 29th of 75, finished 17th with 8 points out of 13, a 1812 performance and +15.2 on my FIDE blitz rating. The game I actually remember is round one. Kirana Groß is rated 1253 and I am rated 1811. She beat me, and she beat me properly.

The women played really well at this tournament and I like seeing more and more of them get into chess. I had just not planned on being the exhibit.

Pia Langeder (1576) in round 3 and Sebastian Gruber (1531) in round 9 were the flag wins. Both of them were borderline winning when their time ran out, and in blitz that is a full point, so I took both. I know exactly what happened there. The clock won, not me.

The middle was rough. Rounds 4 to 7 gave me one win, and Mario Rella (1581) handed me a second loss to a much lower-rated player in round 7. Then it turned: from round 8 I won five of my last six, and the one I dropped went to Nico Brenner (2072), who finished 7th in the whole field.

Black was kinder to me than White all day, 5 out of 7 with the black pieces and 3 out of 6 with White. A tournament that opens with a 1253 beating me and ends twelve places above my seed is a trade I take every time.
