Luck, fallen flags and an unbroken spirit Glück, gefallene Blättchen und ungebrochener Kampfgeist

Seeded 29th of 75 with 1811, I finished 17th on 8 out of 13 — a 1812 performance and +15.2 on my FIDE blitz rating. The number I actually remember, though, is from game one: Kirana Groß, rated 1253, beat me while giving up more than 550 rating points. The women played very, very well at this tournament, and I love seeing more women get into chess. I just did not plan on being the exhibit.

Twice I won more by luck than skill. Against Pia Langeder (1576) in round 3 and against Sebastian Gruber (1531) in round 9 the position was borderline winning for my opponent when their flag fell. I am not going to dress those up as anything else — the clock won them, not me.

The middle of the event was rough. Rounds 4 to 7 gave me exactly one win, and that stretch also contained my second loss to a much lower-rated player, when Mario Rella (1581) beat me in round 7. My spirit stayed unbroken anyway: from round 8 on I won five of the last six games, the only blemish a loss to Nico Brenner (2072), who ended up 7th in the whole field.

Black treated me better than White all evening — 5 out of 7 with the black pieces against 3 out of 6 with White. For thirteen rounds that opened with a 550-point upset against me, finishing 17th and up 15 rating points is a trade I will take.
