Queens blundered
  • Board one on day one: Black against the top seed, and a real game for eighteen moves.
  • Hung my queen on 19...Qf7, took rook, bishop and rook for her, and enjoyed every second of it.
  • Round 2: a bishop for connected passers, then I fetched a second queen. He resigned.

Damen eingestellt

Board one, a hung queen and a second queen Brett eins, eine eingestellte Dame und eine zweite Dame

A double round to open the tournament. Round 1 put me on board one with Black against the top seed, Gernot Blum (2064), and for eighteen moves it was a real game. Then I thought for about a minute on 19...Qf7 and hung my queen the moment I let go of her.

I am not even mad. Instead of resigning I took everything I could get for her — rook, bishop, rook — and I liked the game; dynamically balancing that blunder out was genuinely fun. The equalisation was there for real, too: I calculated 24...Bxd1, and the engine puts that line at a very playable +0.6. I just played 24...Rxd3 instead.

Round 2, White against Viehhauser (1722), went the other way. On move 20 I gave up a bishop for connected passed pawns and marched one of them all the way to c7. Then I got up from the board to fetch a second queen — pure psychological warfare — and he resigned right after 37.Qxa6.

The honest footnote: 37.Qxa6 objectively loses. 37...Bd3! is winning for Black, and if he had found it, that second queen would have been the last thing I got up for all day. He resigned instead. One out of two after day one, and two games I would happily play again.
