Round five, move 23. He had just taken on e5 and there were pawns hanging in both directions, so the automatic move is to take back. My coach told me to name moves that are not a recapture before I recapture, and this is the first time I have done it with the clock running.
The engine has 23...dxe4 as the sixth of the six moves it looked at, and it loses to 24.exf6+ because the pawn recaptures with check while my knight is still on f6. My move is third on that list and 0.16 behind the best one. Three and a bit pawns between the move I played and the move my hand wanted.
One move later I did the same thing in a position that wanted the opposite, and that one cost 1.33. The rule is not never recapture. The rule is ask what the piece you are not taking gets to do with the move you just gave it.
