He could not work out why I was still in my prep Er hat sich nicht erklären können, warum ich noch im Prep war

Game five, Black against Stefan Calvi (2015), board 15. He mated me on move 45 after three and a half hours, and I am 40th.

The report had him right about the first ten moves. He opened 1.e4 like he has in twenty-one games out of twenty-one, put the bishop on e3 and the queen on d2, and pushed the h-pawn at me on move 11, and all of that was in the document, so after move ten his clock read 1:16 and mine read 1:32. Sixteen minutes up on a man 217 points above me. Over my first twenty-three moves the engine does not judge a single move as a mistake, which has not happened to me before.

Then I made it sharp on purpose. On move 22 I pushed the d-pawn and blew the board up with about fifteen minutes each, and we both played the four moves after that in under a minute apiece with the time control still fifteen moves away. It stayed level the whole way. On move 29 he took a rook on e5, I answered with a queen move that does not take it back, and I was a rook down. Qxe5 was the move and it is the engine's first.

Four moves later I traded queens because I thought I still had both rooks. I only worked out where the second one had gone once the trade was on the board. That is what three and a half hours of a position I made as complicated as I could does to you, and I chose the position.

We went through the game together afterwards and he loved it. He said the preparation was accurate, he could not work out why I was still in prep in a structure he has never faced in his life, and he did not know you could prepare somebody's habits with openings they have never played.
