My knight and my bishop were on the wrong squares for six moves Mein Springer und mein Läufer sind sechs Züge lang falsch gestanden

Game six, White against Markus Brandstetter (2027) on board 19. He is the number three seed of sixty-two and he resigned after my thirtieth move.

I left early to buy yfood and read the scouting report for an hour at the venue, and then the traffic took the whole hour. I walked in about ten minutes late, which is twenty minutes from losing the game to the clock, and he had been sitting there waiting for me. What a nice guy.

So I had skimmed the report that morning and nothing else. What stuck was a bit of the Scotch and some plans against the Sicilian, and a4 before the bishop comes out, and he opened with a line the document does not contain. I got the structure anyway, because the report is written as plans instead of moves. On move 6 I looked down and saw that my queenside knight and my queenside bishop had been standing on each other's squares since before the first move. I put them back and we carried on. The Laws of Chess say the whole game should have been cancelled and replayed, which neither of us knew at the board.

The engine has me worse from move nine to move eighteen and it is not one move, it is eleven of them. I never took his pawn on d4 while it was hanging, I took back with the wrong piece on move 12, and I gave a pawn on move 13 to push his queen out to the edge. He defended that perfectly and kept the pawn for six moves. Then he moved his knight to b4, I won the pawn back on b7, and four moves later he saved a rook when he should have given me the exchange. After that I pushed the f-pawn into his king and gave a bishop on h6.

The move I am annoyed about is one nobody can see. On move 20 I found Bd2, calculated the tactic behind it correctly, and threw it away because I could not find the answer to one reply. The answer is Rb1 and it is the only move there. Three points from six rounds, 33rd, and a tournament performance of 1909 against my own 1798.
