Round eight, and I never played a move. Nurija Hasanovic didn't show up, and the arbiter told me he thought the round started at 17:00, not 16:00. The weekend rounds start two hours earlier than the weekday ones, so that's the whole story: a mixed-up start time, and a point that's mine without a single move.

Five from eight now, my first walkover of the tournament. I didn't win this one at the board. There's nothing to analyse either, because there was no game. The rank list only just caught up too: 24th after round seven, 14th after this one, ten places in a day I didn't play.

Round nine is Sunday morning at 09:30, board six, White against Marc Rukwid (1954), both of us on five points. A Monte Carlo model of the last round has me at about 64 percent to finish top ten if I win, and zero if I draw. So it's win or nothing tomorrow.

He did not show. The weekend rounds start at 16:00, two hours earlier than the weekday ones, and the arbiter told me he thought this one started at 17:00. So the point is mine without a single move: my first walkover of the tournament. The rating part, before anyone asks: an unplayed game does not count for rating, so the performance and the +24.4 still come from the seven rounds I actually played. There is nothing to analyse either, because there is no game. I will never know if it was really the mixed-up start time or my Morra prep waiting for him, and I know which story I am telling at the club. 5 out of 8, and the last round is Sunday morning.
